The Business Process Outsourcing (BPO) industry in the Philippines is facing scrutiny as a new study reveals serious health concerns for its workers.
A study conducted by researchers from the University of the Philippines Manila found that BPO employees are experiencing significant levels of physical and mental stress, leading to sleep disturbances and potential occupational diseases.
To reach these conclusions, researchers reviewed studies, laws, policies, news articles, and reports from 2000 to 2022, looking at both numbers and people’s experiences.
“BPO workers face risks related to physical and psychological stress, sleep disturbances, and occupational diseases owing to the unique challenges inherent to the nature of their jobs,” the study said.
Despite existing labor laws, many BPO companies are not fully compliant, and few offer comprehensive wellness programs, the study found.
“While there are existing occupational health and labor laws, compliance among BPO companies remains a problem, and only a few organizations offer comprehensive wellness programs,” the study added.
To tackle these issues, researchers created a guide to help BPO companies set up better health programs at work.
The guide focuses on both physical and mental health and is made for the specific needs of the Philippine BPO industry.
It stresses the need for teamwork between employers, employees, and society to build a supportive workplace that values employee health.
Key elements of the framework likely include:
- Health Risk Assessment: Identifying specific health risks faced by BPO workers, such as stress, sedentary behavior, and eye strain.
- Health Promotion Interventions: Implementing targeted interventions to address identified risks, such as stress management techniques, ergonomic workstation design, and regular breaks.
- Employee Wellness Programs: Offering comprehensive wellness programs that cover various aspects of health, including physical fitness, mental health, and nutrition.
- Workplace Culture: Fostering a positive and supportive work culture that prioritizes employee well-being.
- Collaboration and Partnerships: Collaborating with government agencies, healthcare providers, and community organizations to create a comprehensive approach to workplace health.
Using this guide, BPO companies can boost employee health and well-being, which can lead to higher productivity, fewer absences, and a better work atmosphere.
“Workplace health promotion is vital to warrant the health and safety of BPO workers,” the study concluded.
“This study offers evidence-based recommendations for implementing effective well-being strategies, highlighting the importance of collaboration among employers, employees, and society to prioritize employee health in the workplace” it added.Ⓒ
