In a move that could reshape the Philippines’ public transportation landscape, Indian electric vehicle (EV) company Urban Sphere is setting up shop in the country. Their goal? To introduce electric mini buses as replacements for the aging and iconic jeepneys.
The jeepney, a ubiquitous symbol of Filipino culture, is a converted World War II jeepney that serves as a shared taxi or small bus.
However, concerns about pollution and safety have prompted the Philippine government to push for their modernization.
Urban Sphere’s entry comes at an opportune time. The company is capitalizing on the Philippines’ Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP), a government initiative that aims to replace or upgrade aging jeepneys.
“We are confident in our ability to revolutionize the public transportation sector and enhance quality of life by offering a comprehensive solution suite,” said Karthik Athreya, founder and CEO of Urban Sphere, in an interview with the Philippine News Agency.
The Ivoryline 9m electric bus is designed to support the nation’s efforts to lower carbon emissions and promote the development of eco-friendly urban areas.

The Ivoryline 9m is a zero-emission electric mini bus with a seating capacity of 22 passengers, excluding the driver. It can also accommodate an additional 12 standees.
Urban Sphere highlights the bus’s competitive pricing and inclusion of charging stations and advanced tracking features, though specific pricing details have not been disclosed.
The company is optimistic about its chances in the Philippines, citing the growing trade relationship between the two countries, particularly in the technology sector.
This optimism is bolstered by the recent delivery of BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles from India to the Armed Forces of the Philippines.
Urban Sphere recently participated in the APV (Auto Parts & Vehicles) Expo 2024, aiming to generate interest from local transport operators.
Whether Filipinos will say goodbye to the iconic jeepney in favor of electric minibuses remains to be seen, but Urban Sphere’s entry adds another layer of choice to the Philippines’ evolving public transportation system.Ⓒ
