The Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) met with Department of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael Lotilla to discuss concerns regarding energy security and competitive power rates for Philippine businesses.

PCCI President Consul Enunina Mangio and Chairman for Energy and Power George Barcelon highlighted key issues, including the impact of value-added tax (VAT) on energy generation, exploring alternative coal sources, lowering energy costs, and establishing a holistic approach to secure a reliable power supply for a competitive Philippine industry.

“The PCCI underscored the importance of a VAT-zero rating on energy generation and finding alternative coal sources to bring down energy costs,” a statement from the PCCI said.

While acknowledging the DOE’s commitment to a sustainable energy sector, with an 18% annual growth rate securing supply until 2026, the PCCI emphasized the need for a comprehensive strategy.

Secretary Lotilla, in turn, requested the PCCI’s insights on how the Philippines compares to neighboring countries in their approach to a sustainable and competitive energy industry.

The PCCI pledged to collaborate with the government on energy issues and invited Secretary Lotilla as the keynote speaker for their Power Summit in June.Ⓒ
