The Clark International Airport Corporation (CIAC) is moving forward with plans to construct the Philippines’ largest food trading hub, seeking collaboration with the Netherlands to leverage their expertise in the field.

The Clark National Food Hub, a 60-hectare project with an estimated cost of ₱8.5 billion, aims to become the premier wholesale market and distribution center for high-quality agricultural products in the country. The project aligns with the Marcos administration’s priority to boost the Philippines’ agricultural sector and achieve food security.

Learning from the Dutch masters

In May 2024, CIAC President and CEO Arrey Perez joined a Philippine delegation on a “market sensing and observation mission” to Amsterdam, Netherlands. The delegation met with officials from the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality to learn best practices in agrologistics.

“The Netherlands’ robust agricultural sector and innovative agrologistics capabilities are a center of excellence in trade facilitation and technological innovation in the world,” said Michiel Sweers, Dutch director-general for foreign economic relations.

“The goal is to ensure a more efficient supply chain that will make food accessible, available, and affordable for the Filipino. The best way to do that is to learn from the best,” Department of Trade and Industry Undersecretary Mary Jean Pacheco said.

Key takeaways from the Dutch include the importance of timely delivery, maintaining proper storage conditions, and utilizing modern technology for cost-efficient logistics management, quality control, and transaction facilitation.

A hub for growth

The Clark National Food Hub will be strategically located near the Clark International Airport, providing convenient access to international shipping and major road networks. The project also boasts proximity to cargo giants FedEx and UPS, further enhancing its connectivity and efficiency.

The hub’s services will encompass research and quality control, warehousing, food processing, international shipping, marketing assistance, and trading for both local and foreign markets.

CIAC anticipates project completion within two years and views it as a significant infrastructure investment that will bolster the Philippines’ agricultural economy.Ⓒ
