Key takeaways:

  • Global air travel recovered nearly 94% in 2023 compared to pre-pandemic levels
  • International travel surged, driving the recovery more than domestic travel
  • Dubai International Airport climbed to the second busiest airport globally
  • Tokyo Haneda Airport saw a massive jump to become the 5th busiest airport
  • Air cargo volumes dipped slightly in 2023 due to geopolitical tensions

Air travel roared back in 2023, nearly reaching pre-pandemic levels, according to Airports Council International (ACI) World’s preliminary data. Global passenger traffic surged 27.2% compared to 2022, reflecting a remarkable 93.8% recovery from 2019.

The rebound was driven by a surge in international travel, which grew 36.5% year-over-year, nearing recovery levels of domestic travel (20.2% increase). Factors like China’s reopening and strong travel demand despite economic uncertainties fueled the international growth.

ACI World Director General Luis Felipe de Oliveira attributed the recovery to these factors and highlighted the key role international travel played.

Shifting landscape of busiest airports

The ranking of the world’s busiest airports by passenger traffic saw some significant changes due to the rise of international travel.

  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport retained its top spot.
  • Dubai International Airport climbed to second place for the first time, displacing Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (now third).
  • Tokyo Haneda International Airport made a remarkable jump, going from 16th in 2022 to 5th in 2023.
  • The top 10 busiest airports, representing nearly 10% of global traffic, saw a slight increase (0.7%) compared to 2019 figures. Notably, five of these airports are in the United States.

Air cargo dips slightly

While passenger traffic boomed, air cargo volumes dipped 3.1% year-over-year in 2023. Ongoing geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions were attributed to the decline.

Hong Kong International Airport remained the leader in cargo traffic, followed by Memphis International Airport and Shanghai Pudong International Airport.©️
