Key takeaways:

  • Philippine employers group supports breaks for workers during very hot weather
  • Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) wants companies to decide how to implement these breaks
  • ECOP argues a mandatory policy wouldn’t work as workplaces have different needs (e.g. air-conditioned offices)
  • ECOP acknowledges employees are valuable assets and their well-being is important
  • The group believes flexibility is key to finding solutions that work for each company

The Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) expressed conditional support for proposals to grant employees special breaks during extremely hot weather.

While ECOP recognizes the need to protect workers, they believe the implementation of these “heat breaks” should be left to the discretion of individual employers. They argue a one-size-fits-all approach wouldn’t be effective because businesses have varying needs.

“There is no formula that fits all since each company faces a different situation,” said ECOP President Sergio R. Ortiz-Luis Jr.

ECOP highlighted that some workplaces, like air-conditioned offices or factories with proper ventilation, might not require mandated breaks.

The group emphasized that employers increasingly view their workers as valuable assets and support initiatives that ensure their well-being. However, they believe companies should have the flexibility to determine the most appropriate measures based on their specific circumstances.

The Philippines experiences hot and humid weather throughout much of the year. Due to these consistently high temperatures, proposals for mandated heat breaks for employees have been a topic of discussion.Ⓒ
