Hapag-Lloyd achieved a significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from its fleet in 2023, crediting the progress to measures like increased use of biofuels and deployment of new vessels.

The company cut emissions by 0.8 million tonnes compared to 2022, putting them on track for their ambitious goal of net-zero emissions by 2045.

A key step was a substantial increase in biofuel blends, with over 200,000 tonnes used in 2023. Hapag-Lloyd also deployed three new dual-fuel vessels capable of running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and future alternative fuels.

The company launched “Ship Green,” a biofuel-based solution allowing customers to choose CO2 reduction levels for their shipments.

Hapag-Lloyd also emphasized collaboration within the shipping industry, urging regulators to create a framework for a smooth transition away from fossil fuels. They joined a consortium focused on reducing emissions on a major shipping route and partnered with organizations working on ocean health and clean water access.

“Sustainable and responsible practices are of utmost importance to us,” said Rolf Habben Jansen, CEO of Hapag-Lloyd. “Decarbonization and social responsibility are imperatives, not choices.”

This latest sustainability report highlights Hapag-Lloyd’s commitment to environmental and social responsibility in the maritime industry. The company remains dedicated to its ongoing journey towards a more sustainable future.©️
