Get ready, Bicol! The arrival of the region’s first international container line, Regional Container Lines (RCL), is set to trigger a major economic boom, injecting an estimated ₱1 billion into the coffers of Legazpi Port each month starting March 2024.
A shot in the arm for business
“We are expecting the Eagle Express, represented by the Regional Container Lines (RCL) by March,” announced Segundo Sigmund Freud Barte Jr., acting district collector of the Bureau of Customs (BOC), during a stakeholders meeting on Feb. 21.
“If we have the market, bukas darating yung mga containers (The containers will come tomorrow), they will come,” he added, expressing optimism about exceeding the port’s PHP3 billion revenue target for 2024.
This isn’t just about numbers. RCL’s arrival opens doors for Bicol businesses, offering them quicker and potentially cheaper access to international markets. Imagine farmers shipping fresh produce directly overseas, construction companies importing bulk materials at lower costs, or manufacturers exporting their goods with greater ease. The possibilities are endless.
Local businesses react
“This is a game-changer for us,” exclaimed Aling Marsha, owner of a local handicraft business. “Right now, shipping costs eat into our profits significantly. With RCL, we can finally explore exporting our products globally.”
Similar sentiments echo across industries. A head of a regional construction firm sees RCL as a way to reduce reliance on expensive domestic suppliers. “Importing directly will allow us to access better quality materials at competitive prices, making our projects more cost-effective,” he shared.
More than financial gains
The impact goes beyond immediate financial gains. RCL’s arrival is expected to create new jobs, boost infrastructure development, and attract further investments to Bicol. The region could even evolve into a vital trade hub within the Philippines, connecting domestic producers with international markets.
Sustainability is also on the agenda. The BOC-Port of Legazpi has already implemented a paperless transaction system, aligning with the government’s digitalization efforts. Additionally, RCL is known for its commitment to environmentally friendly practices, making Bicol’s trade journey greener.
While challenges remain, such as ensuring smooth logistics and regulatory alignment, the overall outlook for Bicol is undeniably positive. With RCL setting sail, the region is poised to experience an economic boom, propelling businesses forward and creating a brighter future for its people. So, buckle up, Bicol! The exciting journey begins in March.◼
