President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. (PBBM) took center stage in Davao City on February 7, launching the Davao Public Transport Modernization Project (DPTMP). This ambitious initiative reaffirms the administration’s commitment to developing the region and improving its mass transportation system.

“This is more than just the Ceremonial Signing for the Civil Works Contracts for the DPTMP,” declared PBBM during the 125th founding anniversary of the Department of Transportation (DOTr).

“It is a strong reaffirmation of our commitment to develop the Davao Region,” President Marcos said.

The DPTMP promises a complete overhaul. Imagine a 672-kilometer bus network crisscrossing 29 routes, served by a fleet of 400 electric buses and 500 diesel buses. This modern makeover aims to deliver seamless, high-quality public transport, boosting mobility and accessibility for Davao’s booming population and economy.

But the benefits go beyond convenience. The project is projected to ferry 800,000 passengers daily, creating roughly 3,000 jobs. It’s not just about getting people places; it’s about building a better future for the region.

PBBM envisions the DPTMP as a catalyst for change. “It shows by example that there are feasible alternatives to commuting by private vehicles,” he said. “These can be left behind at homes, without having to be late for work, for school or for whatever you need around and about the places that you live.”

The project aims to decongest streets, improve traffic flow, and reduce pollution, creating a more livable city for everyone.

Collaboration is key to success, and PBBM acknowledged the crucial role of partnerships. He expressed gratitude to Davao City’s local government for their unwavering support and assured residents that their needs will be prioritized throughout construction. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) also received a shout-out for believing in the project and investing in its potential.

“Their support will be repaid with work that does not scrimp on the budget, nor cut corners on workmanship, nor block feedback, nor disregard deadlines.” PBBM pledged. Construction is set to begin in the third quarter of 2024.

But PBBM’s ambitions extend beyond buses. He has instructed relevant agencies to explore financing options for the 103-kilometer Tagum-Davao-Digos railway project. This forward-thinking approach prioritizes commuter-friendly and community-centered transit systems.

The DPTMP is just one piece of the puzzle. PBBM emphasized the need to modernize the entire transportation landscape — airports, railways, seaports,
roads, and even active mobility infrastructure. It’s all part of his vision for a “Bagong Pilipinas,” a Philippines on the move, with Davao leading the charge.◼
