A report by the TradeTech Global initiative, a partnership between the World Economic Forum and the Government of the United Arab Emirates highlights the critical role of technology in meeting the societal, political, commercial, and environmental demands of future trade.

The report, “TradeTech: Catalysing Innovation,” highlights using new technologies for managing supply chains, integrating logistics infrastructure, and handling financial information. These advances are crucial for dealing with the size, complexity, and variety of emerging global trade relationships.

Teamwork among exporters, importers, logistics operators, tech innovators, and policymakers speeds up the shift to new models, revolutionizing how we do global trade.

“Leveraging technology for trade has the potential to unlock trillions of dollars in growth,” said Børge Brende, president of the World Economic Forum. “Fostering trust among stakeholders will drastically speed up how quickly we can benefit.”

The TradeTech Global initiative proposes a three-stage process outlined in the report. This process aims to facilitate the adoption of current and future technology in both advanced and developing economies.

Stage one aligns incentives for collaboration among exporters, importers, and tech innovators, ensuring everyone invests in successful tech-driven global trade solutions. In stage two, incubators and regulatory sandboxes offer vital support and space for technology to develop and scale, seamlessly integrating it into international trade practices.

“The world’s need for sustainable growth and development demands we be ambitious in using technology to overcome the limits of today’s trade,” said His Excellency Dr. Thani Ahmed Al Zeyoudi, Minister of State for Foreign Trade of the United Arab Emirates and chair of the upcoming WTO Ministerial.

He added: “By intelligently deploying technology to make international trade simpler, cheaper, and more transparent, we can raise governments’ ambitions for cutting poverty, boosting growth, and improving sustainability.”

The last stage aims to build a global ecosystem promoting cooperation among stakeholders. The TradeTech Global initiative urges collaboration between exporters, importers, logistics operators, and policymakers to foster a tech-friendly international trade environment.

To boost these efforts, the UAE will host the first TradeTech Forum alongside the World Trade Organization Ministerial Conference in Abu Dhabi in February. This forum offers a platform for key stakeholders to discuss and plan the integration of technology-driven solutions into global trade.

The TradeTech Global initiative’s report underscores the pivotal role of technology cooperation in revolutionizing global trade. By actively engaging stakeholders, aligning incentives, providing support through incubators, and fostering a collaborative global ecosystem, the initiative aims to catalyze innovation and drive sustainable growth in international trade.◼
