Commissioner Bienvenido Y. Rubio shared the Bureau of Customs’ (BOC) accomplishments in 2023 and goals for 2024 during the bureau’s New Year’s Call. The event brought together key officials, emphasizing the BOC’s commitment to progress and financial responsibility.

The BOC made significant strides in modernizing customs processes, with almost all processes now digital. Commissioner Rubio stressed the importance of staying ahead in global trade by embracing technology, saying, “Our commitment to using advanced technology ensures we stay at the forefront of international trade facilitation.”

Financially, the BOC excelled, collecting a record-breaking ₱883.624 billion in 2023, a 2.46% increase from the previous year. This surpassed the set target of ₱874.166 billion. Rubio attributed this success to the collective efforts of the bureau and stressed the need to keep moving forward despite challenges.

Trade facilitation efforts were highlighted, showcasing the BOC’s role in international trade. Ongoing initiatives include monitoring agricultural imports, demonstrating the bureau’s proactive approach to changing trade landscapes. Rubio emphasized that the BOC’s strategic engagements and agreements go beyond facilitating trade, positioning the organization as a forward-thinking participant in the global trade arena.

The BOC’s dedication to border protection resulted in seizing smuggled goods worth ₱43.295 billion through 980 operations. The fuel marking program played a significant role, contributing ₱234.18 billion in duties and taxes. These efforts underline the bureau’s commitment to securing the nation’s borders and ensuring the integrity of trade activities.

Recognizing the human capital, Rubio celebrated the hiring and promotion of 605 individuals. Additionally, he announced the upcoming release of long-awaited 2018 employee rewards in the first quarter of 2024, highlighting the bureau’s commitment to its dedicated workforce.

In conclusion, Commissioner Rubio urged the BOC’s team to maintain momentum, stating, “Starting off is one thing, but maintaining momentum is another. Maintaining momentum is about pushing through challenging moments. And I am counting on your unwavering support to carry on with our plans.”
