Reliable Robotics achieved a historic moment on November 21 by successfully flying an uncrewed Cessna 208B Caravan. This marked a big step in bringing advanced safety technology to aviation. The aircraft was controlled by a pilot sitting 50 miles away in Reliable’s control center.

The breakthrough stems from Reliable’s autonomous flight system, allowing a ground-based pilot to control the aircraft from takeoff to landing, boosting safety through full automation. 

The system is adaptable to various aircraft, ensuring reliability with redundant layers and advanced navigation technology. It is a game-changer, addressing safety issues like controlled flight into terrain (CFIT) and loss of control in flight (LOC-I), which often lead to fatal accidents.

Textron Aviation Inc., the maker of the Cessna Caravan, partnered closely with Reliable Robotics. Chris Hearne, senior VP of engineering and programs at Textron Aviation, sees this as a milestone, saying, “Reliable’s successful flight of an uncrewed Cessna 208 Caravan represents a milestone for the industry in bringing new technology to aviation.”

The Cessna Caravan, a key player in regional cargo flights, connects communities globally. Textron Aviation’s commitment to sustainable flying aligns with Reliable Robotics’ mission to introduce cutting-edge technology to aviation.

Global aviation services company ASL Aviation Holdings, in partnership with Reliable Robotics since 2022, recognizes the potential. With over 160 aircraft in its fleet, ASL is exploring advanced aircraft automation to improve cargo delivery. 

Dave Andrew, ASL Aviation Holdings CEO, notes, “This historic flight is a testament to Reliable’s focused leadership in advancing aviation innovation and capability for the industry.”

Reliable Robotics is not just focused on civilian use. Since 2021, they have been collaborating with the United States Air Force (USAF) to adapt their technology for larger missions like cargo logistics and aerial refueling. 

Col. Elliott Leigh, AFWERX director, praises this achievement, saying, “This milestone accelerates dual-use uncrewed flight opportunities, increasing aviation safety and enabling us to bring a broad range of autonomous military capabilities into denied environments.”

AFWERX is an innovation program in the USAF, fostering collaboration to address challenges, connecting military, industry, and academia for rapid development of innovative solutions and enhanced capabilities.

June 2023 marked a crucial step in Reliable’s journey. The US Federal Aviation Administration officially accepted the certification plan for their autonomous flight system. The plan adheres to existing regulations, signaling a significant move forward in establishing the safety and reliability of autonomous flight systems.◼
